Republicans Want Reagan on DimeConservatives believe the time is right for their icon, the former President, to replace FDR on the nation's ten cent coin
Conservative Republicans angry over an unflattering television movie about Ronald Reagan want to put his image on the dime in place of Democratic icon Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The "Ronald Reagan Dime Act," introduced by Rep. Mark Souder R-Ind. aims to replace Roosevelt's image witt Reagan's image. The CBS docudrama "The Reagans" raised the ire of conservatives by portraying the former President as a doddering old fool and his wife, Nancy, as a domineering witch. "Basically, the message of the 'The Reagans' was that Nancy was the spawn of the devil, sent to earth to wreak havoc on makind, and Ron was a retard," said Souder. "Republicans, of course, see it differently." Democrats were cool to the idea of redesigning the dime, which has featured FDR's face since 1946. "If they want to find another way to honor Ronald Reagan, I'm happy to join with them, but leave the dime alone," said Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass. The "Ronald Reagan Dime Act" comes on the heels of legislation that was passed during a special Thanksgiving holiday day legislative session. Unknown to most Americans, Congress met on Thanksgiving Day and passed the "Barbara Bush Dollar Act," which replaces the image of George Washington with that of President Bush's mother, Barbara.
"That was sneaky," said McGovern. "I'm home eating turkey, and the next thing I know there's a legislative session to pull Washington off the dollar bill. I don't know what's next. Maybe putting Dick CHeney on Mount Rushmore." |
